About Creative Nonfiction

Creative nonfiction is the telling of a true story in an entertaining and creative way.. It is founded on the following six pillars, and they will be our guiding criterion for reviewing your submission. Creative nonfiction is the telling of a true story in an entertaining and creative way.

  1. Story is entertaining, with strong literary elements (including a beginning, middle, end). The author uses the same strategies as they would with a fictional story (cohesive plot, dynamic characters, etc.) but ensures all facts are true.
  2. Story is true. This is creative NONFICTION! 100% of the story should be true. The author should not make things up or incorporate any fantasy elements into their submission.
  3. Story is timely and timeless. “Timely” means that the story captures the essence of what it means to be alive at this point in time; “timeless” means that the the story should have a deeper significance, one that people 50 years in the future or in the past can relate to.
  4. Story has an apparent and deeper subject. This somewhat ties into the “timeless” aspect. The entire story should have one (or more!) cohesive, deep theme that dawns on the reader as they read the story from beginning to end.
  5. Story pays careful attention to craft. This applies to not only standard grammatical conventions (unless they are intentional and advance the purpose) but also the stylistic choices the author uses to create a deep effect on the reader. These could include, but are not limited to, figurative language, change in point of view, one-line paragraphs, poetry excerpts, etc.
  6. Story includes the author, who reflects on the subject. The author should be involved in some way with the story they are telling. There are two major ways of going about this: either the author is “reporting” and reflecting on what is going around them or the author centers their entire story around them.
